When I think of web hosting, I immediately think of GoDaddy.com. I blame this on watching too many Diggnation episodes and being bombarded by Kevin and Alex's mention of who's sponsoring their show. Sometimes a discount coupon is thrown in for good measure, as well. To no surprise of mine, GoDaddy isn't necessarily the best deal for web hosting.
This is where http://www.webhostingchoice.com comes in. I'd say this is a good site to come to for those of you getting started with wanting to create your first website. There is an FAQ page that explains all the acronyms and terminology that you will eventually encounter when shopping for web hosting. They even have a Quick Start section that leads you step by step on what you'd need to get started: 1) get a domain 2) design your site 3) get web hosting
One odd thing I discovered was in their Scams section. They warn of companies trying to lure you in with unlimited bandwidth/space yet on the Best 10 Web Hosting Sites list, all companies offer "Unlimited" disk space and data transfer. Also, their top 10 list is "rated based on affordability, reliability, uptime and tech support," yet there is no mention of who conducted the study and what the score breakdowns were for each company.
All in all, if you're a neophyte and need a friendly website written in easy to understand language, then Web Hosting Choice is a good place to go.
